The final week.

I have been working on elections all my adult life - mostly as a volunteer on someone else's campaign. But I can never remember one quite like this.

People usually have made up their minds by this stage. But there are still lots of voters out there who have yet to decide. I have spoken to thousands of people on the doorsteps and streets of Arfon.

One pensioner told me she had a nice car and saw no need for bus passes. One resident asked me what was I going to do about the "f*****g pakis." One man was clearly out of his head on something when I knocked his door at 10am.

These rare and isolated events tend to stick in your head.  What I have concluded that the great majority of voters have little appetite for tax breaks for the rich and an assault on our public service as advocated by the Tories. There is a progressive consensus in Afon who appreciate Welsh Labour's core message of fairness and social justice. Cutting support to Maes G doesn't get my vote.

I do not know who will win in this seat. But I do know that whoever wins will get a lot less than half the vote. If I am elected I will vote to ensure a fair voting system where no votes are wasted. My wife's mother now lives in a Tory/LibDem marginal. Labour voters there face a cruel choice. Vote for their first preference (and in reality waste their vote) and let the Tory in? Or tactically vote for their second preference and abandon their real candidate. This has to change.

Here in Arfon LibDem supporters know that their vote is wasted too. I want Labour to win outright, but I will be happy to work with anybody who uses the values of fairness and social justice in the difficult decisions ahead. Protecting the most vulnerable members of society and voting reform will be on my agenda.
