I would like to thank the 7928 voters who put a cross against my name in last week’s election. Welsh Labour obtained just over 30% of the votes while Plaid Cymru’s Hywel Williams received 36% and was therefore “first past the post” and duly elected. I congratulate him on becoming the first MP for the new Arfon seat.
I spoke with countless thousands of Arfon voters during the campaign. During that time I met only one LibDem who stated they preferred a deal with the Tories in the event of a hung Parliament. Over a hundred felt far more comfortable with a progressive alliance of centre-left parties dealing with the economic crisis on the basis of tax reform rather than savage cuts in health and education and the reform of the finance system to ensure that bankers’ greed never again crashes the real economy. Local LibDem voters also agreed with Labour's plans to change the voting system to ensure that every vote counts.
The Tories have made no secret of their plans to take an axe to public services. Their cuts will certainly have an impact on the more wealthy areas of the UK but they will hammer areas such as Caernarfon and Bangor. Given my doorstep conversations with LibDem voters, Mr Clegg should be listening to his voter base rather than power hungry Tories.
